Analysis Of The Movie The Bride - 2005 Words

Although Thurman’s character adopts some male characteristics, it can be argued that the film also conforms to Mulvey’s theory. Throughout the film, The Bride is shown as a wronged mother seeking revenge on her family thus fitting to the female stereotype where women are seen to be emotional and having a set role in the household. Moreover, although Thurman is exhibited as a dominant entity, she is also abetting the idea of the voyeuristic pleasure men experience by her tight fitted outfit which can be seen as a way to make the character even more attractive. Due to this outfit, male viewers are given the chance to objectify her as a sex object. The film then exhibits O-Ren’s life in the form of short anime. We learn how she swear s her revenge on her parents’ killer, who also turns out to be a pedophile; Here we can recognize Freud’s idea of the Oedipal trauma being touched upon with O-Ren’s life. She poses as a child prostitute and gets her desired revenge by not only killing her parent’s murderer but also shooting two other men from under a bed. Consequently, we understand O-Ren’s sadistic side which also alludes to Mulvey’s ideas that explain that the male unconscious has two avenues for the disavowal of the castration anxiety that the female gender inflicts. Mulvey expresses that the first escape is to re-enact the original trauma and â€Å"counterbalance it by the devaluation, punishment or saving of the guilty object† (Mulvey, 348), and the second is to complete the fear of castration by the substitution of a fetish object. She explains that the first avenue has associations with sadism and asserting control through punishment of forgiveness; the core of O-Ren’s character. The audience can see this exemplified by a scene in which O-Ren is accused of degrading a council with her ‘half-breed heritage’.
